Learn the Basics
Cryptic crosswords are intimidating at first, but they follow clear rules. Every clue contains two parts: a definition and wordplay.
Step 1
Find The Definition
Usually at the beginning or end of the clue. Treat it as the straight meaning of the answer.
Step 2
Identify The Mechanism
Look for indicator words that suggest anagram, hidden word, reversal, container, or another clue type.
Step 3
Verify Letter By Letter
Confirm each letter comes from valid wordplay, not just a lucky guess that fits the definition.
Anagrams
Letters of a word or phrase are rearranged to form the answer. Look for 'indicator' words like 'mixed', 'broken', or 'crazy'.
Hidden Words
The answer is literally hidden inside a phrase. Look for indicators like 'found in', 'part of', or 'heart of'.
Reversals
A word is written backwards. Look for indicators like 'returned', 'back', or 'mirror'.
Double Definitions
The clue contains two different definitions for the same word. There is no wordplay, just two ways to get to the answer.
Acrostics (Initial Letters)
The answer is formed by the first letters of several words. Look for indicators like 'initially', 'first of', or 'starts'.
Charades / Containers
Two or more words are put together (charade) or one word is placed inside another (container).
